In addition to reading and math, an essential component of the GATE program is the completion of at least one original, long-term project. Students choose this project based on their own interests. Zeynep and her students create a standard rubric for the development and evaluation of each project. Rubrics cover such elements as timelines for original research, development of ideas, presentation, oral practice, audio-visual components etc.
In helping students create projects, Zeynep utilizes Bloom’s Taxonomy, which means that she expects her students to reach the level of evaluation. This requires each student to acquire knowledge, demonstrate comprehension, apply the information, analyze, synthesize, and finally to evaluate what they have learned.
